Updated: Feb 3

On October 30, 2024, CAPSES, alongside state associations and national organizations, attended the initial meeting to form the Media Collaborative Project, hosted by NAPSEC. This initiative aims to improve public perception of special education, particularly Non-Public Schools (NPS) and Non-Public Agencies (NPAs), by promoting positive media stories.

Project Goals and Strategy

The Media Collaborative Project focuses on building long-term media strategies to share the successes of special education programs and organizations. Adrienne Shilton, Senior Leader at the California Alliance, emphasized shifting from crisis-driven coverage to proactive public relations. Aaron Parsons, NAPSEC’s GAC Chair, stressed the importance of forming ongoing relationships with the media to regularly highlight positive stories about students with disabilities.

Next Steps

The project will expand media engagement efforts with several key initiatives:

  • Building a reporter directory and media toolkit tailored for special education advocates.

  • Sharing success stories of students with disabilities.

  • Offering media training for effective communication.

  • Hosting virtual meetings to refine outreach strategies.
