Updated: Feb 3

I am excited to announce that I have been appointed the new Executive Director of the California Association of Private Special Education Schools (CAPSES). It is an honor to take on this role and support an organization that plays such a vital part in advocating for and supporting the education of students with special needs.

At CAPSES, we understand that every student is unique, and that providing them with the right resources and support is crucial for their growth and success. As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of special education, our mission remains clear: to ensure that students with disabilities receive the high-quality education and services they deserve, tailored to their individual needs.

The work of CAPSES is grounded in the belief that all children—regardless of their abilities or challenges—deserve an education that fosters their potential, builds their confidence, and prepares them for the future. This organization has always been a champion for the nonpublic schools and agencies that offer critical services to students who need them most. With our committed members, skilled educators, and passionate advocates, we are creating a network that can make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of families across California.

I am eager to apply my experiences in California’s public education system, combined with my advocacy work both domestically and internationally, to advancing our shared mission.

As I step into this new role, I am committed to partnering with all our leadership and members in driving meaningful progress on key priorities: securing equitable funding, improving access to specialized services, and fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse needs of students with disabilities, including strengthening a specialized workforce.

I firmly believe that by working collaboratively—across families, educators, policymakers, and communities—we can create a more inclusive and supportive educational system that fully recognizes and nurtures the potential of every child.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve. I am excited about what we will accomplish together in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Pati Ortiz, Executive Director

California Association of Private Special Education Schools (CAPSES)
